Just inventoried my gear for the Great Divide Route.  Have just about everything I need.  Still need to pick up a Garmin GPS with topo 24k maps to cover at least Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado.  With my track record for getting lost I think this will be indispensable.  Less than 4 weeks until I hit the trail!

  1. Crazy how rapped up in life we get... I am looking at your little corner filled with just the essential (maybe a comfort or two), but this is all you will need to sustain yourself for the next two months of your life... simply amazing. I think what I love the most about the outdoors is the simplicity of it all, you look dialed and a hell of a lot more organized than I. Can't believe your doing it in less the 4 weeks, insane!!!

  2. After a bit of research I decided against picking up a new Garmin and additional topo maps - just way too much money to throw down. For a GPS unit, all the topo maps to cover the GDR, and the memory to store them I was looking at a minimum of 600 dollars. My alternative option cost me a total of 14 dollars at the apps store.

So, I ended up picking up two solid GPS iphone apps (GPS Kit and Topo Maps) and with these I have virtually limitless storage for downloading very high quality FREE topo maps that I can use on the grid or off the grid. Also planning on bringing my old Garmin Etrex Vista as a back up so that if needed I can reliably get my coordinates that I can then plug into one of my topo map apps to see exactly where I'm at. With the GDR waypoints and route preloaded on the topo maps within the apps I should be set to go. I have my cousin to thank for the heads up on the new GPS apps out there.

  3. Six beers deep (Stone IPA), and I'm sitting on my couch listening to music smiling ear to ear laughing at myself for some reason (wonder why). Great talk tonight! Checking out some new apps myself to download as a gps and topo map for my phone, just in case I need them for future use on our trek...
