An Epic Ride - Banff to Yellowstone

Yellowstone will be the end of my adventure on the Great Divide Route. Unfortunately my left knee was injured (probable meniscal tear) during a fall on some technical single track a few days prior and it has progressively been getting worse. The 1000 miles of trail between here and Banff have been nothing short of amazing. I'm planning to finish the GDR with a south to north trip from the Mexican border up to where I left off in Yellowstone
next summer. Super excited to get down to Sante Fe to see Kari and Skylar and explore the area a bit before I start my new hospitalist gig. I will be posting some post trip thoughts on gear for anyone interested. This was the first time I have ever done a blog and it was really just a lot of fun. I wanted to thank everyone that followed along. It was great reading the blogger posts and TMT comments along the way.

  2. That's horrible to hear about your knee! Ive been following all your posts and have really enjoyed your pictures, thoughts, and determination. Im very sad to see you stop, however your family and boss probably cant wait to see you. You should feel proud about all youve accomplished. I could never get that kind of leave or have the patience to make a trip like yours happen, so I am quite envious.
    Great work J.

    1. Thanks for following the blog. The knee is slowly recovering. Went for a ride pulling Sky behind in a trailer on a flat paved trail that winds through Santa Fe and unfortunatley didn't make it all that far before my knee got a bit angry and swelled up. Fortunately there was a microbrewery just off the trail so we stopped and grabbed some food and a tasty pint of Santa Fe IPA. Needless to say the knee was feeling much better after that.

There would be countless sections of this trail that could probably fit into your busy schedule. Of the 1000 miles that I did I would say that the section through Alberta Canada was by far the most scenic, truly breathtaking. You could knock that out in just a few days.

  3. Bummer but I am sure Kari and Skylar will appreciate your early return! We plan to head through New Mexico around July 14-18th next summer so hopefully we'll see you on our tour of the West and Southwest. Still want to see a pic of those legs J-haha!

    1. We would be psyched to see you guys in July. Give Kari and I a heads up when it gets a bit closer so we can get the time off when you're out. I felt like I was working quite a bit and wasn't able to see you much when you were out visiting last summer in New Hampshire. It sounds like you are settling into your new place in Portland. We'll have to come out and visit. Porland never seems to disappoint, always something going on there.

  4. I'm sorry you had to cut your trip short!! But I have to say, I am glad you were able to see Banff, Glacier and Yellowstone...I think they are the best parts of the Rockies anyway!
Enjoy your extra time at home with your family....you seriously have inspired me to get on my bike more, so thank you for blogging about your experience!

    1. Of course, glad that you enjoyed the blog. It looks like you two have been putting on some miles from the MapMyRide posts on FB. Santa Fe has miles and miles of great trails if you guys are up for a trip to the SW.
